alright,
GDC was sorta fun.
I've been to the Epic booth to say thanks for putting up the contest. Jay Wilbur said hello and invited me for some donuts and a coke. And of course, the unreal engine 3 presentation.
It's nice. It was basically what we all know from the previous videos, plus an actual game demo (3rd person shooter) that looked fancy.
They showed some additional gamefootage to demonstrate dynamic LOD and streaming level content (for HUGE areas or Massively Multiplayer games or stuff like that) which consisted of a giant city where you could drive (and later fly) around.
They develped a new scripting system that looks very much like VVVV or Virtools - meaning it's graphical. The shading system is now graphical as well, just like the maya thing (i don't remember that name, it's very popular though).
After posing a couple of questions to some of the programmers, the matinee guy (his name's going to be on the next machinimag issue but i'm too tired to find out now) gave me a private introduction to the next matinee toolset.
A timeline based system complete with keyframing, curve editing and whatnot. It's great, though it still has some things missing which - we both agreed - aren't that simple to implement...
And then, there was the whole Expo thing. Events like this tend to cause my brain drowning in white noise. Just too many people. Too much information. Whatever.
It was nice though. Not as nasty as consumer tradeshows like the gamesConvetion i went two years ago - though there's less "beautiful" girls running around...
Meeting Paul and Frank was a blast though and i really felt a lot more comfortable once i've been around those guys. It REALLY makes a difference if there's people around you or not. I dig you guys. I really do.
And Carol, of course, Theo's friend, who's hopefully going to steal me some food tomorrow so i don't have to pay a fortune for a bad sandwich...
And, oh boy, i ran out of harddisk space today and my laptop doesn't want to talk to my iPod anymore. Alright, i don't wanna complain. You want some pictures right?
And pictures you get...

And here's a couple of shots i took when walking home. Enjoy.
