just to write this down so i won't forget...

The next generation Matinee tools is very much a keyframing tool. You'll be able to keyframe a wide range of things, from particle systems to movers to cameras to game speed to physics... All of that.
Also, they are trying to incorporate a lipsyncing tool in the next installment of the unreal engine. Though, it still isn't sure how the implementation will look like.
Ah fuck, i already forgot most of what james said. Whatever.

They are thinking about a "render to tga" function, though, there is definetly going to be some sort of renderToDisk function. You still need to rebuild your level if you recalculate lighting (it's not just lightmaps anymore, so there might be occasions when you don't have to rebuild) or build new BSP.

Also, they're incorporating a simple IK solver so you can have your character reach for things or have his feet stay on the ground. Assuming he's set up properly...
