//well
i'm slowly getting comfortable with being back in germany by now. One more weekend and i think i'm set. Yet, there's still plenty of things to do so updates will be rather rare. Hang tight, better times to come...

//
There was a time when i thought almost everything that i'd call "home" would fit onto the harddrive of a portable computer. Well, i was wrong.
You realise that the things that matter cannot be converted to digital signals, nor can face to face communication ever be substituted by anything else.
And most of all, i realised i'm not a machine. There might be a lot of things i'm interested in, and a lot of times i'd rather play around then go to bed.
But without the sensitivity of other people, people you trust, people that take care of you, people that know how you feel, life somehow looses a lot of it's sense. And even the most interesting and promising productions and events won't fill the gap that rests inside of you.
I'm sure there's ways of managing this. Building up new roots, maybe. Maybe there's even people that don't feel this way.
Well i do. I know now.
On the other hand, it doesn't make that much sense to build up another home right now, since there's a ton of new frontiers to be discovered, almost spread over the whole "western" globe.
That said, wouldn't it make much more sense to shift the digital communication from my social life to my work life?
But then again, you cannot work without face to face contact with the one you work for.
It's a choice you make i think, ever and so often again.
Isn't it weird that we're so convinced that you cannot work together without looking each other in the eye? And then we forget that you cannot live together without touching each other's skin from time to time...

Knowing about things and not being able to do something makes me wonder if it's useful for people to know about things...

/////////////////////////////////
//
I wonder how long it takes until noone from any of the so called "western" nations will feel safe in any other country than his own...
And i wonder how long it then takes until everybody from any of the "western" countries won't feel safe anymore even in their own countries...

Time to say goodbye
/////////////////////////////////
//
Not what you might think. I just realised that it's no more use to keep working on two proprietary computer systems.
With all the fun and joy i had on my mac, the time is over. It's too old. It's no use using it any longer when you have top notch hardware sitting right next to it. The main reason i was still using it was, of course, it served superb as an editing platform for DV. But as my DV time now slowly runs out and i have to focus on animation, my G4 just can't handle it anymore.
So i'm selling it.
If anyone's interested, drop me an eMail, the button is on the left.

Guess what, it rained in New York just yesterday. I think i've never been so soaked in my life. So if it rains in NY, it really rains. If you want to know how it feels if you step out of your door during rain, juast hop into a swimming pool.
It's basically the same.
Apart from that, i couldn't sleep so i'm happy to present you the roots of a new generation of interactive storytelling (hopefully) over at PrototypeOne.
That's it from my side today. Except for being tired, being fed up and feeling exhausted.

Almost done!
/////////////////////////////////
//Monday
will be the day! Finally we're close to reaching the end stadium of the project. After seeing spastically weird convulsing 3D Models for three months now, i cannot hold to shake my head unintentionally from time to time, so when you meet me and you notice it, just smile...
Since we're close to the end i can present you with a final press released photo of our marvellous piece. Combining the full impact of the piece as well as the metaphorical approach we had and the simplistic nature of the overall composition, this picture was carefully craved out through dedicated time spent in Photoshop and hitting the F9 key at the right time in Unreal...

Talking about...
/////////////////////////////////
//
side projects:

Just a list to make me keep in mind what's to do and when:
(After all, this is a private weblog which might have some use for myself, didn't you know?)

This year will ultimately see the birth of zeitbrand.net and an overall networking structure to incorporate all my friends and fellow creatives i got to know in the last few years. For a kick-off event, i will have a surprise for all of them,... depending on their will to join...

PTOne story will be carved out tonight and a glance might be made public by sven during the following week.
I still have to do the translation though...

The Journey should become an overall facelift once i hit german ground. A lot of the tools i developed around here will make the overall scripting things much easier and eventually, it might be possible to get those nasty smiley-like gestures out of the characters face...
Not sure if i can get the plant to life though. It's certainly a time issue. But i'll do my best...

Machinimag Issue Two now has some descriptions of the articles it will contain. Check them out at the machinimag fora.
The most ground braking change, apart from an overall new design will be the release date. Hopefully Mid of June.

Netzhautflickern will be launched end of next week due to an idea from sven incorporating some super8 cameras, some major world cities, a whole lot of neo-cultural eyecandy and some great, yet to be found musical artwork.
And i still believe we should launch a website for it, just for the whole fun!

There's still lots of material that is either half or absolutely unedited but from at least very acceptable quality. Even if the only thing that might come out of it is a simple video installation, it would still be worth the extra work.
Where was that guy with them crazy breakbeats again...?

person2184 will finally be my new playground for photography and interactive storytelling. Don't expect much from it. But i had this nice idea and it's not too expensive to get the webspace nowadays...

So that's it. Apart from my work on the second collaboration with Kurt Hentschläger until September 2004, there's not that much time to waste. So i better get going...

Taking a day off
/////////////////////////////////
//sometimes
is the right decision. Even though it is almost every time strongly linked to spending money, times like these help to make life comfortable so far away from home. Besides, the weather just changed after my little afternoon sleep so i had the opportunity to walk through the lower East / lower West side and get some fresh air.
Here's how New York looks like in the summer:

people gather at the few green spots, washington square in this case, and have a good time. Lots of people playing music, somebody spitting and juggling fire, breakdance squads, street preachers, everybodys on the street.

For me, this day turned out to be the big reading day. The obligatory magazine buyout began with the efx magazine, the cinefex and wired. That said, yesterday i had my play and 3dworldmagazine and an additional multiformat games magazine which grabbed my attention by a giant screenshot of the amiga hit "Godz" from the bitmap brothers, but turned out to be the good old half-racist half-sadistic geekmag as usual.
But the big hit came when i entered the forbidden planet comic store and tripped on ChannelZero by Brian Wood. A really really great comic, subversive and extremely crafted, it's main subject is crtiticism of the mass media.
Gues what, i liked it so much that i bought everything they had from him including a designbook showing some development stages...
Brian Wood now designs for Rockstar games, who themselves might be familiar to some of you by the quite famous "Grand Theft Auto" Series.
Interesting how people develop.

Enough written words, back to some more pictures, this time from my new found home in brooklyn, 30 Minutes from Midtown on the G and A Train, located at DeKalb Avenue.
And i must admit, it is slightly more the feeling of being at home...

But according to my non-digitial information acquire-mayhem, i think it's time for yet another bag to take with me on my long awaited trip home...

It will not be easy to convince customs that i won't take anything back from the US...

Alive
/////////////////////////////////
//well,
i know, not much happened on this site since me leaving for France about three weeks ago. Not sure if there's still people out there reading this, but for those who are, well:
I'm back!

Ok, now that this is said, let's have a look a what has been going on in the meanwhile. Let's start top down with the latest improvements on your overall feel-o-meter:

machinimag.com is now final and ready for your reviews. A simple Forum will be added by the end of the week where you can complain about the non-readable fonts and the size of the rest of them. Next Issue is to berelease just before the machinima film festival, should be near August.

Let's step back in time and take a look at marvellous europe in general, france in particular and Istres for the ones who like it very special.

in this lovely image, we see richard who plays a strange bretonian 4 string instrument in front of our lovely hotel. Please notice the beautiful reflections of the sun on the pool in front of the house.
This was a view i was allowed to see for about thirty minutes each day, and i assure you i enjoyed it. The rest of my time looked like this...

in the ever fading spaces between these two states of existence, i managed to have a little bit of fun. And actually i managed to find some other people sharing it with me. Only a few picctures are actually able to grab the true meaning of these sentences, but i'll try and show what i have...

Merci beaucoup tout-le-monde. J'ai eu des journees tres bien, tres drole.
Or something like that. Thanks for helping me with my french, everybody. After all, i found it to be a not-too bad language and i definetly have to learn it...

That's more or less it. For those of you interested in the production itself, there's two website i'd like to point you to.
First, it's the ballet's site. You find it here
Second, it's the site of the sound guy, ulf and the video artist, kurt, i'm working for. It's here.
No i fall asleep again. And maybe tomorrow i'll do the forums...
Good night.
