"Stuttgart is Baden-Württemberg's state capital and the hub of its industries. At the forefront of Germany's post-WW2 economic recovery, Stuttgart started life less auspiciously in 950 AD as a stud farm. Lacking historical monuments, the city attracts visitors with its air of relaxed prosperity and its Mercedes Benz and Porsche museums."

just to write this down so i won't forget...

The next generation Matinee tools is very much a keyframing tool. You'll be able to keyframe a wide range of things, from particle systems to movers to cameras to game speed to physics... All of that.
Also, they are trying to incorporate a lipsyncing tool in the next installment of the unreal engine. Though, it still isn't sure how the implementation will look like.
Ah fuck, i already forgot most of what james said. Whatever.

They are thinking about a "render to tga" function, though, there is definetly going to be some sort of renderToDisk function. You still need to rebuild your level if you recalculate lighting (it's not just lightmaps anymore, so there might be occasions when you don't have to rebuild) or build new BSP.

Also, they're incorporating a simple IK solver so you can have your character reach for things or have his feet stay on the ground. Assuming he's set up properly...

there's a couple of different passes for sale here at the gdc. The really expensive ones, the standard ones (which are far too expensive already), the ones with a nice badge reading "press" and, finally, the affordable "expo passes".
And it goes just like this:
The guys who have the red passes paid more than at least 500$. They're people that actually DO things here. Ranging from somewhat important developers who hear the lectures to VIP guys who make the big deals.
Then you got the press people, with the badge. That's the ones you gotta be nice to.
There's blue passes as well, meaning you got something to show on the expo floor. You got something to offer, right? You can be talked with...

And then...
well, there's the "i have a small dick, don't waste your time with me" pass.
How come i know? People stare at your pass and you can read on their faces. If you got the small dick pass, they just don't want to mess with you. Time's precious, you know? There could be someone important round the corner that you'd miss...

alright,
GDC was sorta fun.
I've been to the Epic booth to say thanks for putting up the contest. Jay Wilbur said hello and invited me for some donuts and a coke. And of course, the unreal engine 3 presentation.
It's nice. It was basically what we all know from the previous videos, plus an actual game demo (3rd person shooter) that looked fancy.
They showed some additional gamefootage to demonstrate dynamic LOD and streaming level content (for HUGE areas or Massively Multiplayer games or stuff like that) which consisted of a giant city where you could drive (and later fly) around.
They develped a new scripting system that looks very much like VVVV or Virtools - meaning it's graphical. The shading system is now graphical as well, just like the maya thing (i don't remember that name, it's very popular though).
After posing a couple of questions to some of the programmers, the matinee guy (his name's going to be on the next machinimag issue but i'm too tired to find out now) gave me a private introduction to the next matinee toolset.
A timeline based system complete with keyframing, curve editing and whatnot. It's great, though it still has some things missing which - we both agreed - aren't that simple to implement...

And then, there was the whole Expo thing. Events like this tend to cause my brain drowning in white noise. Just too many people. Too much information. Whatever.
It was nice though. Not as nasty as consumer tradeshows like the gamesConvetion i went two years ago - though there's less "beautiful" girls running around...

Meeting Paul and Frank was a blast though and i really felt a lot more comfortable once i've been around those guys. It REALLY makes a difference if there's people around you or not. I dig you guys. I really do.
And Carol, of course, Theo's friend, who's hopefully going to steal me some food tomorrow so i don't have to pay a fortune for a bad sandwich...

And, oh boy, i ran out of harddisk space today and my laptop doesn't want to talk to my iPod anymore. Alright, i don't wanna complain. You want some pictures right?
And pictures you get...

And here's a couple of shots i took when walking home. Enjoy.

actually it's quite funny how nice people are round here and, at the same time, how much this makes you feel you're on your own (see how i try to avoid the word "lonely"?).
You're meeting at least five people every day that tell you where they're from, what they do and how great it is that San Francisco is so warm at this time of the year. Of course you're telling the same. We're having a nice conversation don't we?

I'm not complaining, please don't get me wrong. But if there's so many people you meet, how can you possibly build up any sort of relationship?
The answer is - you don't have to. Why would you want to?
It's more like a wild guess, you'd just ask everyone and if there's someone special (maybe someone who's doing fucking cool creative artsy things or whatever) you just keep talking. But then again, everyone is doing fucking cool creative artsy things. There's so many people expressing their ideas in a creative way that's appealing - be it music or visually - and if everybody's doing it, it's nothing special anymore, right?

Well, i guess i'm far too european for this. Or too old already? Nah...
I faintly seem to remember a time when there was nothing else on my mind but interest in meeting new, cool people and travelling to see all those gorgeous places in the world.

Looking at things now, i feel like slowly taking a back seat and watching people play with each other, at least in an environment like this.
But that might just as well be a mood thing, and by the time the fog clears, things might look differently...

On a sidenote:
Though recent experience tells me that denying what you do isn't getting you anywhere, the way people pimp their own work is something i realy have to get used to. I'd rather hurry.

Here's some pictures from lovely San Francisco.
From the hostel i'm staying at and its immediate surroundings.

here's me...

And these are from today. Until about 11 am, the sky was covered in a dense fog.

which looks quite astonishing given the fact that those buildings are REALLY tall...

Ten minutes later, everything was nice, clear, blue and warm.

All these pictures are taken with that digital camera i recently bought and imported into Photoshop using the camera RAW plugin.
The plugin lets you process (literally) your pictures, overexpose or change sturation or shadow strength. There was no more photoshopping once the pictures have been imported.
The results are wicked!

I'm heading off for the bay to get a look at the sea at dusk. Tomorrow's the first day of this years' Game Developers Conference Expo.
The main reason why i'm here.
Let's hope for all those good things to happen...

San Francisco

I arrived in SF yesterday after a fifteen hour flight - not nearly as exhausted as i thought i'd be.
I was really afraid of flying this time. That that i feared i'd fall down, rather the 15 hours pressed in a totally uncomfortable seating position between hundreds of other people, with bad air and not enough to drink.
But surprisingly it was ok.

Unfortunately, i just found out that i forgot all those little necessary connection cables i would have needed to send you some pictures and update my music. Instead i took all sorts of totally unnecessary plugs and cables with me. So i gotta go get some things and then i'm sure i can show you how beatiful San Francisco is.
Nice weather, lovely people and unbelieveably steep hills - it's all there.

My hostel is situated just right next to chinatown and is called "green tortoise hostel". It's gorgeous. It has great breakfast (as i'm trying now) lovely people and is quite affordable - though you'd need to share your room with someone.
If you're into backpacking it's definetly the place to go.
I'll post some pictures as soon as i got all the equipment.
Take care, all of you.
