BedBugs. It's pretty simple and pretty devastating. Bedbugs are small creatures that come crawling up to feed on your body at night.
Bianca got biten first. She had red marks all over her body, we counted about 70 on the first day - the day i returned from California.
After catching a bug on the bed itself, we went to dennis (the guy who's subletting the room to me) and got a Vacuum and some anti-pest spray.
After thoroughly spraying the whole room, we went for some beer with theo and hoped to get a control of the situation...

but boy were we mistaken.
Next morning, Bianca looked like a piece of streuselkuchen and immediately left. I got something to eat with peter and discussed the situation with Dennis, who wanted to spray the room himself again and even installed a plastic sheet on the floor, effectively sealing it.
After a couple of night with nearly no sleep, i returned and read up on the topic on the internet (obviously) and after realising that most people needed a couple of professional exterminator session to get rid of them, my fear elevated.
I fell asleep at last, waking up sometime around noon the next day and felt ok. A couple hours later though, the itching began and small red marks kept showing up on my legs and my hands, and some other places that are awkward to think about.
So, when getting home that same day i decided to pack my stuff and leave the appartement. As i had a flight to toronto the next day, i had to hurry and i felt awkward, but it so didn't make sense to saty. I was already a nervous wreck with no hope to get any more sleep in that bedroom there.
Plus, they stick to your clothes and stuff and i don't want to bring them back wth me when i return.

So, here i am, in Toronto, in the Marriott hotel. Now with enough sleep to smile again and itchings but no fear of having a safe place to sleep...

There's more coming, about California and my two nice visitors, Peter and Bianca

oh, and if anyone happens to know a reasonably priced place in New York where i can stay and have my love come visit me, i am very much in need for one!

sad news.
Why i was giving my lecture for the people at mediamatic, some bastards broke into the workshop room and stole 5 laptop computers.
Fortunately, the data was stored on harddrives not being stolen and Daniel's laptop remained unseen by the robbers.
What a sad ending to a nice 4 days of Amsterdam.
Thank you so much and looking forward to seeing you again.

Here are some impression from my Amsterdam time.

i am totally into functional design.
Like, really.
But sometimes you can be a bit over the top. Enter the Lloydhotel.
A gorgeous, big hotel in Amsterdam, slightly off the inner city. With spacious rooms...

so spacious in fact, that you have a huge pillar in the room.
But that's just the beginning. The REAL design masterpiece is the shower. Didn't see it in the picture above? Let me help you a bit...

there you go. Coming straight out of the wall.
Given that this is a double bed room, i was a bit puzzled with the way the dutch people treat intimacy.
Anyway. I like the subtle hint with the mop...

Apart from that, the bed is great and the view/weather is nice. Sunny but cold.

Tomorrow's the day, so i thought in lack of business cards, i should at least have a somewhat more up-to-date website to tell people to go to.
Like, this.

I just arrived in Amsterdam with a whole bunch of Americans on spring-break.
"Hey.....how's it going..."
Thanks to the lovely person sitting next to me (i forgot her name) the flight wasn't too bad, but crowded nevertheless.
I feel so alienated after stroming Amsterdam Centraal with the american Mob that i did not dare taking out my camera - yet!
Though, i present you with a simple but true fact of Life, learned on - guess what - the internet:

Business as usual!

found on a walk through greenpoint, just before buying a huge amount of LEGOs that will keep me occupied for the next couple of months.
I gotta do more physical stuff...

I decided to take a couple of photos around my neighborhood after discovering a beautiful walk over a bridge to the 7 train yesterday when meeting with Claudia in Grand Central's Oyster Bar.
I basically repeated the whole trip - this time with my camera - at about the same time of day (5 pm).

As you can see, the weather is really nice. Not exactly warm, but very sunny. Actually, it didn't rain since i came here. Well, it was snowing.
Or maybe it did, i can't remember.

7 takes you directly to Grand Central station - 1 stop. I've actually never been to Grand central terminal until yesterday. I saw a documentation about it on TV a couple of months ago that was rather unsatisfying, but the place itself is very astounding.

That is an eight second shot up there. I took a couple of pictures at different settings, but i realized that the one with the flag cut off look best...

Earlier, I played around with mirrors.Notice the slight difference in the two pictures?

And finally, i have to say thank you to Adobe for sponsoring me this new, fun tool to play around with.

Thank you!

no, i'm not going out.
First of all, i'm sick and preparing one hot water bottle after another and drinking throat relief tea (yak!).

And second, it just started snowing again.

And no, i will not shave, because it actually helps to prevent your cheeks from freezing.
You know, the whole "back to nature" stuff...

Oh, and just because i have enough time to nerd out like crazy, here are a couple of links you must look at:

The falling sand game, that will chew up your time.
And the ultimate postcard from the future - no, it's from the past! - the VOXEL engine.

TRUE next generation gaming running even on old fashioned Pentium III's.
I told ya, the future is sprites and pixels!

More random stuff including Shadow of the colossus being the first computer game that almost made me cry. Though, keep in mind how sentimental i am when it comes to cinema.
It also has the best film-style motion blur implementation in a game that i have seen. Ever.
I thought that was worth noting.
Finally:
Props to Robert Heyes for finishing his diploma project globalville.
